Why I Created “Singing the Lord’s Song”
By now, my psalms course is underway! One of the reasons I create courses like “Singing the Lord’s Song” is because I believe strongly that Hoodoo is one of the true American folk practices because it exemplifies the best of who we are and can be, even in times of severe oppression. I have always loved the fact that, while Hoodoo is at its core African, it maintained an openness to cultural encounters and exchange with numerous ethnic groups over the years. This openness and inclusivity is itself counter-cultural and a point of resistance in times in this country when a large majority of people have wanted it to be the opposite. Our American folk practices did not wait for the haters to change their minds and hearts. The practices surged ahead, mixed and evolved, always staying a step ahead of the racism and fascism like John the Conqueror!
We continue in this stream of resistance when we practice spiritualities like psalm magic, which in and of itself was a part of the historic cultural exchanges between the Black and Jewish communities as African Americans migrated out of the South and into metropolitan areas like New York, Chicago and Oakland. I can see this mixture of religious and ethnic cultures in the ways the workings are articulated even in the past. It is also personally important to me in my own practice to do what I do aware that numerous others before me have done the same rituals, spoken the same prayers, held the same faith. That Great Cloud of Witnesses the Bible speaks of.
If it is not clear, the “Singing the Lord’s Song” class is about far more than techniques and recipes. It is a way to carry the energy and intention of resistance by way of inclusivity in the Hoodoo that we do. Like fried chicken and collard greens, this is good food for the soul.
This class and many of the other new courses I offer have both the full purchase price and payment plan options to suit your needs. If you’d like to join me, the course can be found here: https://soulfulsantero.squarespace.com/soufulsanterocourses
